BC Hydro to upgrade Peachland electrical system | Peachland News

April 27, 2011

Construction has already begun on an electrical system upgrade that BC Hydro says will provide better service to Peachland.

“You have one source of power,” Gene Bryant told council Tuesday.

Bryant said BC Hydro identified two areas of concern when it comes to service in Peachland: The current system is reaching its capacity and there is declining reliability in the event of a forest fire or motor vehicle accident.

Peachland requires increased electrical capacity to meet planned and future growth, according to Bryant.

The town is serviced from BC Hydro’s Westbank substation and, for the most part, the transmission lines parallel Hwy. 97. Bryant said that, in some areas, there is no vehicle access to power poles.

“The single feeder to Peachland will soon reach its capacity,” said Bryant.

BC Hydro will spend $2.5 million this year on upgrading service to Peachland, according to Byrant. The project will involved relocating the existing feeder from challenging terrain into identified road allowances. In addition, a second electrical feeder from the Westbank substation will be strung to serve Peachland.

Bryant said BC Hydro decided not to put another pole in. Instead, the existing pole line will be reconfigured to carry two feeders.

Existing 45-foot poles will be replaced by 60-foot poles, said Bryant. “The increase of 15 feet is necessary for safety.”

The majority of the new poles will be located at the same location as existing poles and Bryant said the viewscapes of about a dozen homes will be somewhat impacted.

Some minor pruning and vegetation removal will also be done during the process. There will also be some construction noise, minor traffic delays and the possibility of short, localized power outages.

Construction began this week on the West Kelowna end of the electrical service and Byrant said the project is expected to be complete by the end of October.

Peachland residents will received a project overview sheet containing a map, photos and project description in the mail.

Coun. Peter Schierbeck noted that, because BC Hydro is running the new, 25,000 volt feeder on the same poles as the existing feeder, an accident or fire could still take out all power to Peachland.

“The risk still exists… to take out both,” agreed Bryant. He added that moving some inaccessible poles closer to roads will mean improved accessibility and reduced downtown in the event of a problem.

Unconventional “Hydraulic Hydro Storage” System Offers Energy ...

That's some heavy lifting (authorstream.com/Heindl)

One of the main barriers to the diffusion of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power is their inherent variability. If excess energy produced could be stored cheaply and used during times of lower production, this issue could be largely mitigated. Several technologies are under development as possible options for storing energy from the grid, including batteries that store energy in chemicals, mechanical flywheels that store energy as rotational energy, and hydroelectric dams that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy by retaining and channeling rivers.

And, on the bizarre end of the spectrum, we can find a hydraulic water storage system proposed by physicist Dr. Eduard Heindl, a professor at Furtwangen University in Germany.

Heindl’s idea is to store potential energy by using water as a hydraulic fluid to transfer power underground. A project would involve carving out a gigantic cylinder of dense rock, such as granite, by drilling two underground circular tunnels with 500-meter radiuses, one tunnel several hundred meters deep and another at a 1-kilometer depth directly underneath the first. A saw mill would be lowered into the tunnels connected to a saw mill at the surface via a wire saw. The saw mills would work away at the rock to separate the cylinder from the deposit. A seal would then be placed within the first tunnel to close off the system to prevent the loss of potential energy.

Water would be pumped down an adjacent mine shaft to the base of the cylinder. Under enough pressure, the rock cylinder (representing a “piston” in hydraulic engineering terms) would then lift, storing potential energy in the system as pressurized water. Extra electricity produced on the grid could be stored within the system by converting electric energy to mechanical energy using a generator to power the pump. When the grid required energy, the process could be reversed to generate electricity for the grid.

Although drilling, tunneling, sawing, and sealing the cylinder would be expensive, the costs grow in linear proportion or proportionately to the surface area of the rock cylinder, while the possible amount of energy able to be stored in the system grows cubically with the volume of the rock cylinder. The economics of the project become increasingly more attractive with its size. The cost of the generator and pump would be directly proportional to the rate at which energy is transferred into the system and back out.

Assuming that power could evenly be bought at €20 (US$30) per megawatt-hour during peak production and sold at €70 (US$100) per MWh during peak consumption, and assuming that the system had 70 percent conversion efficiency, Heindl expects a return on investment in four years for a system with a 500 meter radius and 1 kilometer depth.

So far, utilities have focused on finding ways to make electricity generation from other energy sources play well with wind and solar. Accurate weather forecasting with technologies such as Doppler radar usually allows utilities enough time to balance the grid’s load when renewable energy generation drops. Utilities maintain the grid either by scheduling-in spare capacity from sources that are able to come on line quickly, such as natural gas plants and hydropower plants, or by signing contracts with industrial power users to pull their plugs at short notice in exchange for lower power rates.

Connecting grids over large distances with high-voltage transmission lines also helps account for wind variability and potentially even solar availability. The greater diversity of areas with high potential for wind and solar energy that are connected to the grid, the more likely the overall power output will stay close to its statistical average.

But as electricity generation from wind and solar continues to represent a larger share of the energy mix, energy storage will become increasingly attractive, and perhaps a necessary component of the energy system. One report suggests that the market for grid energy storage technologies will reach $2.5 billion by 2015.

Does it pass the laugh test?

No.

It is difficult for a layperson to judge the feasibility of such a system, although it may be hard to stop anyone from laughing as they try. Hydraulic hydro storage remains utterly untested on the scale proposed by Dr. Heindl, and it is hard to take an idea seriously that involves lifting a cylinder of granite 300 meters or more across hundreds of meters into the air.

Does it have that WOW factor?

Yes.

A wall of solid rock rising into the sky, too big across to see around? Anyone would stop and stare.

What does it bring to the table?

Artificial height, at low cost.

Hydroelectric energy storage is currently the cheapest way to store energy, but it requires a location with sufficient height differential. The hydraulic hydro storage system would create such a differential at any location with sufficiently dense rock, at theoretically far lower cost.

How scalable is it?

Scale certainly isn’t a problem.

Due to the costs of drilling, the system only comes in one size: extra large. According to Dr. Heindl, hydro hydraulic storage would likely become cost-competitive with hydroelectric storage only once it reaches storage capacies on the order of a country’s electricity consumption. Using Heindl’s price estimates, the system reaches cost-competitiveness around the 450 meter radius/900 meter height range, storing 1,000 gigawatt-hours (or more than half the daily electrical production of Germany).

How close is it to commercialization?

Close, yet so far.

Heindl’s system relies entirely on existing technologies, and at a 500 meter radius/1 kilometer height, Dr. Heindl predicts that the system would reach a return on investment in four years. But cost, of course, is not the issue here. Which brings us to…

What is the biggest obstacle to success?

How to pick just one?

Hydro hydraulic storage faces a number of technical challenges, including how such a system would manage any tectonic movement, how to maintain the seal between the rock cylinder and the hydraulic fluid, and how to reduce friction so as to prevent energy loss.

But clearly the biggest obstacle is public acceptance. Not only is this idea a complete departure from the energy technologies that currently exist commercially, but it seems downright ominous. No matter how many times I’m told that as long as half the massive floating rock cylinder is below the ground it can’t possibly tip over I’d probably continue to have nightmares of a giant rock rolling over my house. People raise Cain over living near wind turbines. Who would ever live near one of these?

The final word(s):

A neat idea.

As renewable energy becomes increasingly central to power generation, creative thinking will be needed to balance the load in the grid. At the very least, Dr. Heindl’s hydraulic hydro storage system embodies this spirit.

The website of Dat Sach : General Hydroponics – Adopt Hydroponics ...

Article by Hydroponics Nutrients

The idea of not necessarily requiring a cultivable land to grow plants might seem far-fetched to some, but with advances in hydroponics this is a reality today. Hydroponics, a simple method that enables plant growth using water and essential mineral nutrients, is fast becoming a prevalent option. Hydroponics is essentially a branch of agriculture where you grow plants without soil. In place of soil you can use a nutrient solution which is prepared by dissolving the nutrients in water. The nutrient solution gives your plants the nutrients that they would otherwise derive from soil..

Etymologically, ‘hydroponics’ comes from the Greek words ‘hydro’ – water, and ‘ponos’ – work. Hydroponics is a technique of plant cultivation that primarily uses water as a base; or in other words, it is a soil-less cultivation process. In the absence of soil to source nutrients from, hydroponics uses methods like the nutrient film technique (NFT) to gather plant nutrition. Hydroponics does not mean your plants are left completely at the mercy of water. There are, of course, growing media that you can use in place of soil, and tested hydroponics nutrients developed by companies who have years of proven success in making hydroponics nutrient formulae. You can use hydroponic growing media like perlite, gravel, sand, coir among other materials in place of soil, depending on the crop you choose to grow hydroponically..

With the population soaring and arable land becoming more and more scarce and costly, this revolutionary technology is becoming increasingly popular. Plants can be grown in greenhouses, multilevel buildings, basement or rooftops. Rooftop gardening using hydroponics system is also becoming prevalent in bigger cities where the cost of procuring land is very high..

Hydroponics being an easy and convenient technique to adopt, it is increasingly becoming easier to become an amateur grower. You grow more plants in the same surface area as compared to what you could grow using soil-based cultivation techniques. This is an eco- friendly technique which will help save water and you can even recycle it if you are conscious about the consumption of this priceless and limited resource. You can use hydroponic growing media like perlite, gravel, sand, coir among other materials in place of soil, depending on the crop you choose..

What you get out of hydroponics is much more than what you could ever hope to get out of soil-based cultivation and traditional agricultural techniques. The yield from hydroponics is much higher – almost 30-35% more. With increasing food shortage crises plaguing the world, hydroponics could be the solution to food scarcity. Since hydroponics takes up less space, it won’t interfere with existing green cover by decreasing forest space that might be converted to agricultural zones. Hydroponics is not climate dependant and is most effective when the plants are grown indoors. You will have several options to grow your hydroponic plant – from a simple grow room to a climate controlled greenhouse.

How to Grow Hydroponic Mint « Avocados Love Hydroponics

Hydroponics, a method for growing plants without soil, uses a soilless mix and a nutrient-enriched water system that supplies the plant roots with nutrients on a regular schedule. Hydroponic kits are sold online and at gardening centers that specialize in hydroponic gardening.

To learn more about hydroponics, visit one of the loveliest gardens on the web!

Setting up a small, home system is simple. Hydroponic systems are healthy and require less growing space than traditional gardening, making them ideal for those with limited growing space. With an adequate light source, they can be used year-round, indoors and out. Mint is a good herb for a hydroponic system, particularly for beginners; it requires plenty of water to grow and maintenance is limited once it has been planted.

Guidelines

1. Add the soilless growing medium to the hydroponic growing kit, following the directions that came with the kit. Your specific growing kit may specify a particular medium. Sand, polystyrene, perlite and peat are only a few of the soilless mixes used in hydroponic growing.

2. Prepare the nutrient solution and water mix and load it into the growing kit. Different nutrient solutions have slightly different water to nutrient ratios, depending on the brand and the strength of the nutrient solutions. Follow the directions that came with your nutrient solution.

3. Add the mint plants to the kit. Do not remove the planting medium from around the roots, although it is best if you purchase seedlings that have been rooted in a soilless mix to begin with. If growing your own seedlings from seed, use a soilless mix. Place the mint plants in separate containers in the kit; ideally, each plant should be separated.

4. Provide full sun conditions. The mint can be placed outside in full light during the summer months. In cooler weather, move the unit inside and locate the hydroponic system under a grow lamp for 12-16 hours daily for the optimum growth of the plants.

Hydroponic vegetable gardens helps you grow your choice of crops and plants and also healthy plants to look at and also how much you want? Which type of crops or plants to grow.

Hydroponic simply means growing plants with the aid of mineral nutrients solution and not the soil. In Hydroponic vegetable gardens the plants roots are grown in inert grow medium like gravel, water, sand or even air etc. So, let’s learn some of the most hydroponic gardening secrets to make your own garden with quality crops and plants without any much efforts. The roots of the vegetables grow largely to search for food and water. All the hydroponically grown plants can grow up taller and don’t involve an extensive root system because their nutrients are readily available to the root system wherein it’s not the case in soil medium in which the root extend itself much to get its basic nutrients requirements from the soil. Hydroponic gardening is a more proficient way of growing vegetables than soil-based plants. Plants can grow drastically and effectively together even if they are grown close to each other in hydroponic vegetable gardens. Unlike in traditional agriculture system, the where the plants need more gap because the soil create bigger roots for the plants.

In hydroponic vegetable gardening water acts as the reservoir or medium for the mineral nutrients for the plants to absorb it. But researches state that only soil is not vital for the plant growth. The mineral nutrients need to dissolve in water, so that the plants can absorb it. If the fundamental mineral nutrients are provided to the vegetables through water in an artificial form, the plant then doesn’t require soil for its growth. Therefore, hydroponic gardens are coming into picture for its very effective and useful cultivation technique that has brought about a great revolution in agricultural sector.

When you are planning to make hydroponic vegetable gardens, Pick from the variety of types of containers available in the market, the type of hydroponic gardening supplies you will be using for your hydroponic gardens. When gardening hydroponics vegetable there is no specific nutrient solutions are taken into account for the growth of the plants. Once the plant starts growing and start using the nutrients, composition may happen to change. Rockwool is known to be one of the most commonly used mediums for Hydroponics vegetable growing. It helps the plant growth in every stage. You can grow crops to the advanced level in a very small area, allowing the crop turnaround time. Hydroponic Gardening facilitates you with a whole new method of growing crops with a healthy and rich way. There will be larger no of plants and crops grown by the help of hydroponics vegetable gardens than with traditional way of growing crops. Also, the quality that you will get with the output grown by the help of hydroponics you won’t get with old agricultural techniques. In Hydroponics, the plants root are inundated in the water solution which is again a mixture of organic nutrients in a proper container or tray which have holes in it to put the plants in it. The roots are open and submerged in the water to get its required nutrients from it. Hence, Hydroponic is making a very fast market than the traditional way of agricultural methods.
