GRANULAR ACTIVATED CARBON AIR FILTERS FOR HYDROPONIC GROW ROOM

"Carbon air filters are normally the last thing you get round to buying on that very long and expensive shopping list?, when you first start out on your Indoor Grow Room the price of all the bits soon add up to a hell of a lot of cash, so what most folk do ?me included? is cut out what seams at the time a fairly none essential item, and its only when your crop starts to ripen that you realize that you my have made a Big mistake.

? IDEAL FILTERING MEDIUM

Activated carbon filters offer the ideal solution to odour and other air borne contaminate removal. They absorb impurities to the extent of about 40% of their own weight. Carbon also acts against mold and bacterial contamination in greenhouses and grow rooms.

? HOW DO CARBON AIR FILTERS WORK

Because of the huge amount of micro size hole, bit like an aero chocolate bar, but on a very much smaller scale.

With it?s phenomenal absorbent capacity has long been in use as a purifying agent for air and water. Its action in removing gases, particulate matter and even micro-organisms, carbon granules have found many applications in diverse fields from gas masks for use in wars to absorption of radioactive gases in nuclear plants. Activated air carbon filters have also proved very effective in controlling odour from grow rooms and green houses, as well as whole house carbon filters.

With 99 % aromatic absorption rate activated carbon fiber air filters ensure the removal of almost all odours from the air.

Activated carbon filters are also available in environmentally friendly models that allow the user to refill or replace the carbon granules as necessary, ?and even the ones that aren?t, can be hacked, normally by just removing a couple of rivets?.

Most carbon air filters, ?have quite rightly so? come down in price in resent years, and the hydroponic grow shops have realized that people are refilling carbon filters with bought bags of (Type CTC70) activated carbon granules, normally the one that are for fish tank filtering, so that?s nudged them into offering a refill service and some also offer a new filter sleeve too, for a small cost of course, although taking your old carbon filter back for refilling can be a bind, but with a little shopping round on the net you can now acquire both for fairly little money.

Carbon Filters are activated carbon filters that are designed to remove volatile organic compounds from the air. A variety of sizes are available to fit 4inch to 12inch extractor fans flanges. The activated carbon within the cans Filter 99.5% of all volatiles from the air.The filter size required for you application will depend on the amount of air flow required for your application. Two rules of thumb are to maintain an air flow that is eight to ten times the total volume of your growroom space per hour, for your indoor growing applications.

Although if your growing in cold surroundings like a garage, replacing your growroom air eight to ten time an hour may well be to much for your setup, as the growroom temperature will drop below the magic 72f

? PROTECTING YOUR CARBON FILTER

Carbon filters come with an outer fabric sleeve, which protects the carbon granules from dust, which will over time reduce the effectiveness to absorb odours, so replace these fabric sleeves every 3 months.

? TOP TIP

?Rather than rely on these very thin fabric sleeves to remove dust partial, I prefer to use a cooker fume hood filter wrapped round the outside, as they remove the smaller dust partials, which is what clog?s up the very small holes in your carbon granules?.

? SO WHAT SIZE AIR CARBON FILTER DO I NEED

Most carbon filters will only remove smells from the air when the humidity is bellow 70% and temperature is also below 80?C, so its important to keep a high turnover of air, in your grow room to maintain carbon filtering performance optimized.

? ALSO

The best size of carbon granules for grow rooms are the 3mm sized granules as these leave less space for air to escape round.

Make sure you purchase the correct size carbon air filter to suit the extractor fan you are using, find out the flow rate for your particular modal, The more the fan air flow rating is below the max for the carbon filter, but above your grow rooms refresh cycle the better, so a large carbon filter, attached to a medium sized extractor fan, but still suits your growing room, should work well for most growroom odour removal.

? DIY CARBON FILTERS

Making your own hydroponic carbon air filter for all types of odour control are fairly easy to make providing you keep to a few basic rules, in this howto I?ll show you how to make a granular air filter for under TWENTY POUNDS, or even less if you can manage to buy the parts locally so quite a saving, considering some shops are still trying to sell for eighty pounds and for a small, and about three hundred for a large carbon air filter.

Thanks for looking at carbon air filters & fans, and if you've used "if finished" any of the howto's, then please let me no how you got on.

And as always "please try the RRS feed,it will let you no when pages are updated and new ones added ( no email address needed )
