These grow light stand are easily make from inexpensive PVC tubing that can be bought from all hardware stores. Many folk choose to start their seeds off indoors, just to get that extra few weeks or even months head start on the growing season, and like me either just don?t want to be hanging grow light from their ceiling, nor really want to buy a really expensive grow room light stand, so here?s a inexpensive and simple, lightweight design that you?ll be able to take down then no longer needed.

And if you feel that you?d like your growing light stands to be that little extra sturdy then you can always supplement the PVC piping and connectors with copper water pipe and connectors instead.

For the purposes of this homemade howto build your own grow light stands, we?ll presume that building a light stand for three, three-foot fluorescent and that you want your grow light stand to be two feet off the floor.

Grow Light Stand Parts list

? 12x T Piece PVC connectors

? 4x Right Angle PVC connector

? 6 meters of 22mm PVC tubing

All theses PVC parts above are normally used for over-flows for bathroom piping.

First off cut eight two inch sections of 22mm tubing, then with four of them place a T piece connector on top of each one.

Now place the other four two inch pipes on top of the T pieces that you?ve just connected..And also your four remaining T piece connectors place them on top of the two inch pieces of tubing.

So what your left with is a two-inch 22mm tubing, with a T piece, with another two inch 22mm tubing with a T piece on top of that.

Now cut four two foot sections and place them on top of the T piece that you?ve just fitted in number three above with one right angle on top of each one, then put your last four two inch pieces on the end of your right angles, you now have all four led ready to fit.

Put pop your last four T pieces onto the ends of them 2inch pieces, with the center three foots to connect both legs together.

You should now have the grow light stand, standing on all four legs.

All that?s left is to cut the top 22mm PVC tubing and fit, so cut two three foots and two four foots and attach and decide how many fluorescent grow light fittings you?d like.

? Tips

? Purchase all your PVC parts, right angle elbows, T pieces and lengths from the same manufacturer, to ensure a good tight fit for your grow light stand.

? Measure twice and cut once and use a hacksaw to cut with.

? This homemade grow light stand how to plan is easily adapted, just adjust the side pieces to suit your grow light stands needs.

? If your wanting a larger light stand, you can use copper water piping instead ?the same parts are also available as the PVC parts, or just use a copper water pipe for the part of the frame that you fluorescent grow lights hang off.

? Any parts that you feel don?t fit well together, simply swap with another one, its more than likely that will fix the problem and if not then wrap some vinyl insulation tap round the tubing ends before fitting.

? Tools You?ll Need For Your Homemade Plant Light Stand

? Hack-saw

? Drill and 5mm drill bit

? Magic Marker

? Set square

? Box section steel tubing

0.5 and 0.8 inch

? Vice ?but not essential

? Metal file ?for sharp edges?

As you can see, you?ll not need many tools for this homemade plant light stand, and what you don?t have just beg borrow or steal, ?ok that last one?s a joke.?

? Buying your box section steel

Box section steels cheaper than you may think, if you find somewhere local, which size you buy ?or what?s available? is up to you, but I used 0.8 of an inch and 0.5 inch, the 0.5 is for sliding into the inside of the 0.8 so?s you?ll be able to adjust the height easily.

? Triangle plates

While your at the iron mongers, you?ll need to also pick up an off cut of 2mm thick plate 12x12 inch, you?ll probably be able to find a suitable piece in there of cut box ?all iron mongers will have a scrap box that you?ll be able to rummage though and probably wont cost anything either.

Firstly you?ll cut three sections, which two will become the feet for your stand, and the other you will later hang your plant light from.Two, two and a half foot sections ?30inch.?

Now for them two shorter bits that are sitting on top of the light stand feet.Two one foot sections ?12inch.? But don?t try fitting them just yet.

Cutting the two triangles, ready for use.12 by 12 inch.

Cut a length of box section for the vertical light stand section.4 foot "48inches.

With the magic marker, mark out where them two bars need to be, 20inches from what will become the front ?where your grow light will hang over? and remember to make sure the vertical box section, plus the triangle has room to just fit when you mark it out.

Once marked out clamp and drill out, and bolt together, and also drill and bolt the vertical and the triangle before fixing to the two feet.

With the three-foot section that you bought specially to go inside the vertical plant light bar. ?36inch.? for the light stand and mark out every six inches and drill all the way though, ?these will be for adjusting your plant light stand.?

With the section third section that you cut earlier ?along with the feet? and the remaining triangle, clamp onto the vertical box section, 20inches out ?the same distance as the feet? and the triangle and check its horizontal with a spirit level, ?then magic marker it? drill it out and bolt it up.

With the main plant light stand built you can now put any extra hooks for cables you?d like, along with a lick of paint.

Cheap grow lights, whats yours grow light reflector doing for you

Cheap grow lights are the ones that have a peace of aluminum bent over to for the reflector, or some like to call ?HOOD? these types of cheap reflectors are very common, although their better than nothing, their not brilliant either, for one thing the HIP or CFL bulbs, often sag down due to the poor design and over all build quality.

Buying cheap hoods is an easy mistake to make, especially if your just starting out with indoor growing as there is so much to buy and think about ?hell I?ve done it too? and at the time, even these cheap looking reflectors weren?t cheap to buy, I no longer have the reflector, but here?s a pic I nabbed off the net, it looked just like my old ,cheap grow lights reflector, identical in fact.

Bad points

? Very poor light distribution

? Very poor build quality

? Shortens bulb life (inn less using CFL

As you can see, its pretty cheap looking grow light, I now sat in the attic as a spare, just in case ?not that i'm a hoarder or anything? anyway my next reflector I bought, after I had done some reading first this time, I decided on an air cooled reflector which I new was going to cost an arm and a leg, at the time, plus 160 pound, but it does what I want and that?s to prevent reflected heat for damaging the bulb and to keep them summer month from over heating my grow room, its also really easy to hang ? and looks super cool too?

Good points

? Keeps bulb vertical to reflector ? Prevents bulb heat damage

? Easy to adjust height

? Keeps room cooler

? Looks super cool

Although my reflector at the time was expensive, I do now see them at a very good price at about double the price of the cheapest of the cheap, so now theirs no reason to buy the real cheap one, for that little extra money about 30 pound more than them cheap ones, you get a hole lot more for your money.

. BALLASTS FOR YOUR LIGHTS

What?s the ballast like, that comes with cheap grow light reflectors

Reflector and ballasts normally come in kit form, and the ballast will be in the same price band, which means it wont is digital ballast and will look summing like this...

? Magnetic Ballasts

The most popular type of ballast is magnetic ballasts, these types are still popular due to there price tag and are technically referred to as CWAT (constant wattage auto transformers) which are large (due to the massive transformer inside) and can also become very noisy and are less economical to run than the digital ballasts, also shortens the life of high pressure sodium lights and sounds like a power sub station-BUZ BUZ

. Digital ballasts

Digital ballasts are a fairly new arrival, they?re more expensive than the traditional magnetic ballasts and some offer automatic detection of HPS and MH bulb as the two types cant be ran on the same type of ballast, inn less a switch able ballast is used, there also fairly silent, light and have an extend bulb life due to more accurate control over current, the appearance of a "flicker-free" light output due to the electronic ballasts high-switching frequency generally 15,000 Hz as opposed to 60Hz for the standard magnetic(transformer ballast)
