We do not need to rely on taking up large tracts of land with agriculture, polluting our atmosphere with delivery truck exhaust fumes, and leaving our crops to the mercy of the elements the way our ancestors did. Dr. Dickson Despommier, a professor of microbiology at Columbia University, originally came up with the idea of the Vertical Farm Project, as a solution to the future pressure on land and resources and as a way of reducing the carbon footprint of our cities. Since the beginning of the project, a number of environmentally friendly 'vertical farms' have been designed for New York, Toronto and Paris.

Toronto scientist, Gordon Graff designed a concept building known as the SkyFarm which would sit in the centre of the city's theatre district. His 58 floor tower design could provide enough food at the centre of the city for an estimated 35,000 people, every day. It would comprise of different crops, vegetables and fruits, all being grown hydroponically, using water in place of soil. During hydroponic growth, plants are fed nutrients dissolved in water in a strictly controlled environment.

The benefits to the environment of producing food in vertical greenhouse-like farms in the centre of town would be multiple. Not only are distribution vehicle emissions cut by growing food in the place where it will be eaten, but there is also no need for ploughing, no digging, and no seasonal droughts. Crops are protected from the elements and run off or 'dirty water' is eliminated as water can be recycled within the hydroponic system of the building.

Also, because plants grown hydroponically are in a controlled environment, with no soil, there are also no soil borne diseases or pests to worry about; the city's food could be produced without the need for chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

Hydroponic growth requires only one twentieth of the water used to irrigate a farm growing the same number of plants, yet yields are higher. Because there is a continuous flow of nutrients to the plant, the plant can concentrate its energy on producing fruit rather than roots. Hydroponic lights and a CO2 rich atmosphere within the building could also increase food production by stimulating photosynthesis and lengthening the daylight hours available to the plants.

Gordon's SkyFarm idea would be a totally self sustainable building, powered by solar panels. He also says that non edible parts of plants could be composted, producing methane; this biofuel is a source of renewable energy which could be contributed to the local power grid. The SkyFarm could even develop into a scientific research facility or an eco-tourism attraction, creating jobs and drawing attention to the city as a whole.

The spirit and aims of the Vertical Farm Project have been enthusiastically received all over the world. An environmentally friendly Science Barge is run by New York Sun Works to prove the point to city inhabitants that food can be successfully grown hydroponically within the city. School groups and apartment communities have been particularly taken with the project, which illustrates how using the citys' 14,000 acres of sunny rooftop space to grow plants hydroponically, could feed 20 million people across the city of New York and the surrounding area.

BC Hydro to upgrade Peachland electrical system | Peachland News

Construction has already begun on an electrical system upgrade that BC Hydro says will provide better service to Peachland.

“You have one source of power,” Gene Bryant told council Tuesday.

Bryant said BC Hydro identified two areas of concern when it comes to service in Peachland: The current system is reaching its capacity and there is declining reliability in the event of a forest fire or motor vehicle accident.

Peachland requires increased electrical capacity to meet planned and future growth, according to Bryant.

The town is serviced from BC Hydro’s Westbank substation and, for the most part, the transmission lines parallel Hwy. 97. Bryant said that, in some areas, there is no vehicle access to power poles.

“The single feeder to Peachland will soon reach its capacity,” said Bryant.

BC Hydro will spend $2.5 million this year on upgrading service to Peachland, according to Byrant. The project will involved relocating the existing feeder from challenging terrain into identified road allowances. In addition, a second electrical feeder from the Westbank substation will be strung to serve Peachland.

Bryant said BC Hydro decided not to put another pole in. Instead, the existing pole line will be reconfigured to carry two feeders.

Existing 45-foot poles will be replaced by 60-foot poles, said Bryant. “The increase of 15 feet is necessary for safety.”

The majority of the new poles will be located at the same location as existing poles and Bryant said the viewscapes of about a dozen homes will be somewhat impacted.

Some minor pruning and vegetation removal will also be done during the process. There will also be some construction noise, minor traffic delays and the possibility of short, localized power outages.

Construction began this week on the West Kelowna end of the electrical service and Byrant said the project is expected to be complete by the end of October.

Peachland residents will received a project overview sheet containing a map, photos and project description in the mail.

Coun. Peter Schierbeck noted that, because BC Hydro is running the new, 25,000 volt feeder on the same poles as the existing feeder, an accident or fire could still take out all power to Peachland.

“The risk still exists… to take out both,” agreed Bryant. He added that moving some inaccessible poles closer to roads will mean improved accessibility and reduced downtown in the event of a problem.

One of the main barriers to the diffusion of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power is their inherent variability. If excess energy produced could be stored cheaply and used during times of lower production, this issue could be largely mitigated. Several technologies are under development as possible options for storing energy from the grid, including batteries that store energy in chemicals, mechanical flywheels that store energy as rotational energy, and hydroelectric dams that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy by retaining and channeling rivers.

And, on the bizarre end of the spectrum, we can find a hydraulic water storage system proposed by physicist Dr. Eduard Heindl, a professor at Furtwangen University in Germany.

Heindl’s idea is to store potential energy by using water as a hydraulic fluid to transfer power underground. A project would involve carving out a gigantic cylinder of dense rock, such as granite, by drilling two underground circular tunnels with 500-meter radiuses, one tunnel several hundred meters deep and another at a 1-kilometer depth directly underneath the first. A saw mill would be lowered into the tunnels connected to a saw mill at the surface via a wire saw. The saw mills would work away at the rock to separate the cylinder from the deposit. A seal would then be placed within the first tunnel to close off the system to prevent the loss of potential energy.

Water would be pumped down an adjacent mine shaft to the base of the cylinder. Under enough pressure, the rock cylinder (representing a “piston” in hydraulic engineering terms) would then lift, storing potential energy in the system as pressurized water. Extra electricity produced on the grid could be stored within the system by converting electric energy to mechanical energy using a generator to power the pump. When the grid required energy, the process could be reversed to generate electricity for the grid.

Although drilling, tunneling, sawing, and sealing the cylinder would be expensive, the costs grow in linear proportion or proportionately to the surface area of the rock cylinder, while the possible amount of energy able to be stored in the system grows cubically with the volume of the rock cylinder. The economics of the project become increasingly more attractive with its size. The cost of the generator and pump would be directly proportional to the rate at which energy is transferred into the system and back out.

Assuming that power could evenly be bought at €20 (US$30) per megawatt-hour during peak production and sold at €70 (US$100) per MWh during peak consumption, and assuming that the system had 70 percent conversion efficiency, Heindl expects a return on investment in four years for a system with a 500 meter radius and 1 kilometer depth.

So far, utilities have focused on finding ways to make electricity generation from other energy sources play well with wind and solar. Accurate weather forecasting with technologies such as Doppler radar usually allows utilities enough time to balance the grid’s load when renewable energy generation drops. Utilities maintain the grid either by scheduling-in spare capacity from sources that are able to come on line quickly, such as natural gas plants and hydropower plants, or by signing contracts with industrial power users to pull their plugs at short notice in exchange for lower power rates.

Connecting grids over large distances with high-voltage transmission lines also helps account for wind variability and potentially even solar availability. The greater diversity of areas with high potential for wind and solar energy that are connected to the grid, the more likely the overall power output will stay close to its statistical average.

But as electricity generation from wind and solar continues to represent a larger share of the energy mix, energy storage will become increasingly attractive, and perhaps a necessary component of the energy system. One report suggests that the market for grid energy storage technologies will reach $2.5 billion by 2015.

Does it pass the laugh test?

No.

It is difficult for a layperson to judge the feasibility of such a system, although it may be hard to stop anyone from laughing as they try. Hydraulic hydro storage remains utterly untested on the scale proposed by Dr. Heindl, and it is hard to take an idea seriously that involves lifting a cylinder of granite 300 meters or more across hundreds of meters into the air.

Does it have that WOW factor?

Yes.

A wall of solid rock rising into the sky, too big across to see around? Anyone would stop and stare.

What does it bring to the table?

Artificial height, at low cost.

Hydroelectric energy storage is currently the cheapest way to store energy, but it requires a location with sufficient height differential. The hydraulic hydro storage system would create such a differential at any location with sufficiently dense rock, at theoretically far lower cost.

How scalable is it?

Scale certainly isn’t a problem.

Due to the costs of drilling, the system only comes in one size: extra large. According to Dr. Heindl, hydro hydraulic storage would likely become cost-competitive with hydroelectric storage only once it reaches storage capacies on the order of a country’s electricity consumption. Using Heindl’s price estimates, the system reaches cost-competitiveness around the 450 meter radius/900 meter height range, storing 1,000 gigawatt-hours (or more than half the daily electrical production of Germany).

How close is it to commercialization?

Close, yet so far.

Heindl’s system relies entirely on existing technologies, and at a 500 meter radius/1 kilometer height, Dr. Heindl predicts that the system would reach a return on investment in four years. But cost, of course, is not the issue here. Which brings us to…

What is the biggest obstacle to success?

How to pick just one?

Hydro hydraulic storage faces a number of technical challenges, including how such a system would manage any tectonic movement, how to maintain the seal between the rock cylinder and the hydraulic fluid, and how to reduce friction so as to prevent energy loss.

But clearly the biggest obstacle is public acceptance. Not only is this idea a complete departure from the energy technologies that currently exist commercially, but it seems downright ominous. No matter how many times I’m told that as long as half the massive floating rock cylinder is below the ground it can’t possibly tip over I’d probably continue to have nightmares of a giant rock rolling over my house. People raise Cain over living near wind turbines. Who would ever live near one of these?

All three of these magazines are given to hydroponic stores free of charge. These stores then decide whether or not they will give them away or sell them. From what I have been told these magazines generate their revenue more from advertisements than subscriptions.

Gardenweb has a multitude of forums about gardening and one specific to hydroponics. The members on gardenweb are very friendly and the forum is EXTREMELY active. Most of the projects discussed there are DIY and I would highly recommend networking with the people there based on your stated interests.

I really want to know if it really outperforms most other nutes.

Here's a bit of background.
I've been growing on and off for about 20 years. Before GH I was using EcoGrow dry 3-part nutes and was happy. Switched to GH and liked it just fine too. Then I moved to a different province and took a break for a few years.
FF to now.
I'm using Plantlife's Holland Secret 3-part base nutes with amazing success. I don't and have never used any of the additives that are available these days. My control room does look like a bit of a growstore though because I do use stuff like DM Zone, SM-90, CalMag...I have Great White, Rosemary and neem oil, NPSs, Mosquito dunks, pH up and down, calibrating solutions...

I'm making HUGE budz with my RDWC trees. I know I know...if it aint broke...but...
It's pretty boring. All I get to do these days is go in and take a look..temps, rh and everything always looks great. Once a week I get to mix new batches of nutes. I tie-up the odd branch pretty much daily but yeah...Other than harvests and rotations and looking after mums and babies...it's pretty smooth.

I'm ready to make a change. My systems seem to be working without a hitch for a very long time now. I kinda wanna give AN a shot. I've searched here and at other sites and real info on it seems hard to find. Most threads end up in pissing matches, forums for secret product reps to push their wares, people who haven't tried AN but being haters, people who swear by it but have never tried anything else...

I'm really interested to know what peoples' results with AN are/have been compared to other nute lines like GH. AND...which line of AN base nutes to use.

I know that it's more $ but if it's worth it I don't really care.
What really bothers me though (and not just about AN) is that there are SO many additives available. I realize that different people, strains and growing systems and stage of plant development require different "diets" but...it seems that these companies are saying...if you use our base nutes you'll have deficient plants unless you use all these additives...
While Plantlife does sell a line of additives and has mixing instructions for different stages (seedlings, mild general, veg, beginning flower, bloom and ripen), they also have "better" more selective feeding schedules available online according to what week of growth you're in. For instance, each of the 8 weeks of flowering (for an 8 week strain) lists different ratios of the base nutes.

SO...my questions are...does AN really outperform most of it's competition? AND...are all these available additives (boosters, sweeteners, enhancers...) worth it or necessary...or better yet...for those of you who have run with AND without additives...did you notice a tangible difference?

Just to let you know...I run a sterile res so am not interested in organic nutes or additives...nor sweeteners or carbs or enzymes.
AND
I know that AN has big ads, a lot of marketing money, is expensive and hated by a lot of growers. All the politics and speculation aside...will I see improvement by using AN base nutes and will I see a difference using additives and if so which ones. In my books even a 10% increase in yield and quality will make it worth it.

Hopefully we can get this sorted once and for all.

Young roots are prone to shock if overfed, but without a strong, healthy root system the plant cannot uptake and process further nutrients.

The pre-veg phase should last 7-10 days. After transplanting seedlings and clones it is best to use a T-5 fluorescent bulb fixture on a light cycle of 18 to 24 hours for at least a week heading into the veg phase, as very young plants cannot make use of high intensity hydroponics lighting. The ideal temperature for new plants is around 72 degrees with a relative humidity level between 55 and 60 percent. Transplanted seedlings and clones are ready to begin a growth nutrient regimen, marking the beginning of the veg stage. Nutrients high in nitrogen are the best for promoting vegetative growth, while bacteria such as mycorrhizae encourage strong roots. Hydroponics growers who have a comfortable nutrient regimen may also want to take advantage of organic teas to supplement their garden’s diet.

During the veg phase hydroponics growers use the same light cycle, temperature and nutrients (although the feeding regimen is typically adjusted to match the plant’s size and needs). The goal of the veg phase is to grow strong, healthy root and branch systems. Strong branches support big flowers and healthy roots allow plants to grow to their maximum potential. During the veg phase most hydroponics growers will exchange T-5 fluorescent bulbs for high intensity hydroponics lighting in order to provide plants with as much light as possible.

Every plant grows at a different rate so veg time typically varies for each variety. Plants are ready to switch into the bloom cycle when they have reached between 12” and 24” measured from the plant base to the top of the plant. Bloom phase is marked by a change in light cycle in which plants receive 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. Plants grown strong during the veg phase are sturdy enough to support large flowers.
